First national call for the Luksic Foundation’s Conversemos Mamá (Let’s Talk Mom) program

  • The free, online initiative offers guidance via WhatsApp, practical information and meeting spaces with other mothers, promoting the well-being of mothers and the neurodevelopment of their children during the first thousand days of life.
  • Applications can be submitted through the Luksic Foundation’s website until Sunday, October 19.

Neuroscience has shown that the first thousand days of a child’s life are decisive for his or her development and well-being, and have implications for his or her social and learning abilities. During this period, the brain grows faster than ever: up to 80% of its functions develop and more than one million new connections are generated every second.

For the first time, Fundación Luksic will launch “Conversemos Mamá (Let’s Talk Mom) nationwide, a free online program that accompanies pregnant women and mothers of newborns through WhatsApp guidance, practical content and meeting spaces with other mothers, providing support and strategies to promote the development of their children.

“When mothers do not have support networks or accessible information, it is more challenging to provide enriching experiences to their children. This has a direct impact -in the medium and long term- on their social and learning abilities, and ends up widening the gap between those who grow up in vulnerable contexts and those who have more opportunities,” explained María Fernanda Orellana, director of the Luksic Foundation’s Children’s area.

Evidence supports the urgency of these initiatives. In a study conducted in public CESFAM, the prevalence of elevated symptoms of depression in perinatal women (pregnancy and postpartum) reached between 13.9% and 20.9% (“Salud mental en madres en el período perinatal”, 2021). These types of emotional difficulties directly impact the well-being of mothers and their ability to bond with their children. In turn, recent research shows that 42% of parents state that their children have learning problems or special educational needs, which reinforces the importance of supporting early development.

In 2022, an impact evaluation showed that the program has had statistically significant results on child development and neuroprotective factors, such as: breastfeeding, birth weight and height, mothers’ perception of support, access to information, and understanding of the first 1,000 days of life.
